Gatsby Soiree – the joint was jumpin’
“Come in cats and check your hats, I mean this joint is jumpin’..!”
The Ebell of Los Angeles was proud to serve as West Coast home to Jay Gatsby as we celebrated with our friends from the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles on March 22. We partied like it was 1922, with music provided by the always amazing Dean Mora and his California Poppies, floor show numbers featuring the Gatsby Dancers (i.e. adventurous and delightful Ebell members wearing costumes from the Ebell Vintage Collection!), souvenir photo by Paper Moon Vintage, and dance exhibitions and lessons so keep the dance floor hoppin’. Guided tours of the Ebell were presented, allowing rare access to the whole of the Clubhouse and Wilshire Ebell Theatre.
And then there was dinner…! Executive Chef Louis Pechan created a menu fit for dappers and dames of the highest persuasion: Oysters Rockafeller, Smoked Salmon Mousse on Buttered Toast, Deviled Eggs, Ebell Waldorf Salad, Filet Mignon with Pommes Anna, and Lemon Cake with Creme Anglaise and Berries. And what would be a party without the giggle water?? Served at the bar were The Gatsby Negroni and The Prohibition (recipes available here) And rumor has it, if you looked carefully and asked the right questions, you might have stumbled upon some illegal gambling tucked away in a secret place.
The Ebell’s Collection of Vintage Costumes were featured not only in the floor show that evening, but also on display in the Gallery Hallway. Even the mannequins dressed to impress!
Thank you, Mr. Gatsby, for suggesting the soiree. Thanks also to photographer Julie Hopkins from Camera Creations Photography for capturing the festivities. And a very special “thank you” to Ebell Board Members Jane Martin and Loyce Braun for orchestrating an amazing evening and spectacular entertainment.
As they say, “A little party never killed nobody!”
